This is a naturally-occurring crystal cluster of the mineral Amethyst, a variety of quartz (SiO2) that gets its rich purple color from trace amounts of ferric iron. The crystals formed inside a gas pocket within a basaltic lava. This specimen was mined in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
